Three healthy plug plants of Okra, variety Clemson spineless, delivered to your door in letterbox friendly packaging. This is an okra that is described as being suitable for our UK climates.
Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) also known as ladies’ fingers is a tender crop that needs plenty of heat and sun, so in the UK it grows more successfully in a greenhouse or polytunnel, although plants may also do well outdoors on a sunny spot, especially in a long hot summer. Okra likes similar conditions to aubergines. The pods are used in soups, stews and curries and are high in fibre and calcium.
The RHS says…
Growing up to 120cm (4ft) tall, okra plants have attractive lobed leaves and hibiscus-like flowers that are followed by long, tapering pods. These are ready to harvest from mid-summer to autumn.
Clemson Spineless is a nearly thorn-free annual which grows to around 1.5m in a summer. It has palmate green leaves and cream flowers with a dark red eye. These are produced in small clusters daily, which then develop into elongated green fruits, best harvested at 4-5cm long.
No pruning required. Keep harvesting young seed pods to prolong flowering. Wear gloves to protect against irritating hairs on stems
When you receive your plants please ensure the plugs are damp (dunking them in water for a few moments or until any bubbles stop is the best way to achieve this) then plant up immediately into small pots. In late May or early June plant out into their final growing space.
Okra can be grown in large pots or buckets (with drainage holes) or two per grow bag, or planted out into a greenhouse or garden border. Ensure the soil isn’t too cold and protect young plants outdoors with garden fleece or cloches, especially in colder spells.
