Ready to plant – dispatching from the week beginning 26 October.

Multi-sown plugs - each plug will contain a minimum of FIVE plants, (and often many more), so three plugs = at least 15 plants, six plugs = at least 30 plants.

Welsh onions (Allium fistulosum, also known as Japanese Bunching Onions) are hardy perennial onions. They can be planted straight into prepared, free-draining ground on arrival where conditions are suitable, provided the soil isn’t frozen or waterlogged. In colder or very wet gardens, pot them on and keep them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse until spring.

Photo 2 shows the young plugs currently being grown for this presale. They will only be dispatched once they are ready for planting.

Strong, UK-grown multi-sown plug plants of white Welsh onions.

Each multi-sown plug contains multiple young plants – a 3-plug pack will contain at least 15 individual Welsh onion seedlings.

Welsh onions are clump-forming bunching onions grown for their tender onion stems and green leaves, similar to spring onions. Once established they are wonderfully productive, providing repeated harvests over a long season. Originally from China, where it has been cultivated for over 2000 years, this hardy perennial onion is widely grown across East Asia, including Japan, where it is known as 'negi'.

These really are amazing onions - a single plant gradually multiplies into a substantial clump, often producing 8-10 individual onions, (and sometimes more) that can be divided, harvested and replanted - see photo 4.

They’re one of our favourite perennial cut and come again vegetables: easy to grow, hardy, low-maintenance and with an excellent flavour. Great for salads, stir-fries, soups, garnishes and Asian cooking.

Plant in sun or light partial shade in fertile, free-draining soil. Gently tease the plug apart and plant individually around 10–15cm apart, or leave plants in small clumps if you prefer, or if they don’t separate easily. Water well after planting and keep moist while they establish.

Suitable for kitchen gardens, raised beds, allotments, pots and containers, cottage gardens and perennial vegetable gardens.

Harvest repeatedly once established. We often lift a bunch, take the larger onions to eat and replant the smallest from the clump to grow on again.
